The Whistler – June 2013

Jeff Koons

Looking back in The Whistler archives, we found a story dated January 1997:

“The final proposals for the improvements to Brighton Station are being considered…there has been a slight delay…but if all goes to plan, the officers hope that the improvements will start on the site in October.”

Meeting Mums

Meeting Mums is a weekly drop-in meeting for mums (with or without their babies and toddlers). Meeting Mums is a space where we can talk, share, recharge, listen, be heard or just wonder around.

Joy, exhaustion, anxiety and overwhelming unconditional love, emotions all mothers have to embrace. What matters really is the awareness of not being alone in the experience of your emotions.

This group is an opportunity to join other mums, make friends and share on-going support and connection in a cosy circle and a relaxed atmosphere.

We welcome all mums to join us every Wednesday from 2.00pm until 3.30pm

WHAT: Meeting Mums – support group
WHERE: West Hill Hall, Compton Avenue, Brighton BN1 3PS
WHEN: every Wednesday from the 26th June
WHAT TIME: 2.00-3.30pm
HOW MUCH: donation

Train Dead – The Weekend

This week Andrew Osbourne-Smythe gives us an insight into how he relaxes over a weekend.

Commuting can take its toll on the nerves. Monday to Friday I have to suffer the constant rudeness of people invading my half of the train seat arm rest in an enduring territorial battle not unlike the pointless Great War; the endless typing of neurotic sadists out to rile me; the idiotic chatter of telly addicts from Preston Park; the deliberate broadcast of tuneless bleeps set to override my classical music and the messy pastry flaking bombs exploding from the mouths of pie-eating thugs of Haywards Heath. Thank God for the peaceful weekends in West Hill.

West Hill Treasure Hunt

Treasure HuntThe gorgeous Dorothy Lamb and the handsome Jack Jackson are devising a Treasure Hunt on Saturday 20th July – meet at West Hill Hall at 1:45pm and set off from 2pm. Treasures Hunts are a great way to explore the local area – they introduce you to things you may have never seen before, even though you may pass them every day.

This Treasure Hunt is designed to be intriguing but not too difficult – suitable for the whole family or a team of friends to join in and a great way to spend a sunny (please) Saturday afternoon. A treasure hunt is a game in which participants follow a set of directions and discover clues to help solve a puzzle en route. Prizes are awarded.

To register your interest, please write to or let Jack in Bright News know. Pre-registration will help us to work out how many copies of the clues we’ll need on the day.
