If you’ve been thinking about getting online but don’t know where to start then the Council Connect sessions are a good place to start. From sending your first email to paying your first bill, volunteers are on hand to show you how it’s done. Contact your local library to find out about your nearest session.
OLDER PEOPLE’S COUNCIL
Established in 2001 the OPC works to ensure that all older people in Brighton & Hove are treated with respect and have access to services and support to lead fulfilling lives. To be able to vote for the OPC and to stand for election to the OPC you need to be 60 or over. Public meetings are held at the Jubilee Library from 10.15am to 1pm. The next meeting is on 17 September 2013 and Dr Peter Wilkinson, the Deputy Director of Public Heath will discuss the Public Health priorities for Older People in Brighton and Hove. Refreshments are provided.
The Activity Partners Scheme enables people who are feeling isolated or frail to get out more and join in activities that they may not have the confidence to do on their own. Activities can include anything: short walks, joining a local knitting, art or memories group or take up swimming. Anyone over 50 with an interest in the health and well-being of older people can volunteer to be an Activity Partner. You need to be available for a minimum 6 month period and for around 2 hours a week once matched with a scheme member. All volunteers receive basic training, insurance cover, out of pocket expenses, ongoing support and advice. Call 01273 688117 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
CAN’T BE OUT AND ABOUT?
Did you know that if you’re housebound the library delivery service will deliver books to people who are housebound, have health or mobility difficulties? Housebound users also get longer loans and concessions on fees and charges. To find out more or to volunteer, email email@example.com or phone Matt Day on 01273 296965.
