The Whistler – August 2018

‘Watering the Little Trees’ by Sam Toft
Colour-in Competition

Competition

We are delighted to show the work of local artist, Sam Toft, on the cover of The Whistler (Aug/Sept), and happier still that she has suggested that we ask our readers – young and old – to enter their coloured-in front page into a competition to receive an exclusive screen print from the shop. The **end of September** is the cut-off date and there are a variety of ways to bring your artistic endeavours to the attention of Sam, who will judge the entries.
1. Email a photo of your entry to thewhistler1976@gmail.com and we will ensure it is posted on FB Sam Toft
2. Pop into the Little Mustard Shop on Clifton Hill with your front page and one of Sam’s lovely assistants will photograph your entry and post it on FB Sam Toft
3. If you don’t have a copy of The Whistler, you can find it right here. You can save and print the image from here, and do 1 or 2 above!

Find your coloured pencils, felt pens or whatever medium suits you and get colouring! Good luck.

evening Yoga class at the Hall after being with us for 21 years! He’s started a new class in London on Wednesdays so he’s packing up his yoga mats and saying goodbye to the Hall. Goodbye Jim and good luck! This means that we have a rare weekday evening slot available between 5:30pm and 7:45pm on Wednesdays. Get in touch with us at westhillhall@gmail.com if you’d like to fill it.

Save the Dates

For those of you who remember the Grand Sales Pam Bean used to organise in the Hall, the last one was in 2009, the year before she died. This year, as a throw-back to those sales, WHCA is holding a Grand Christmas Sale on 24 November. Tables cost just £10, so if you’d like to book one to sell some bric-a-brac, crafty goods, or pre-loved items, do get in touch Colette and Louise at westhillhall@gmail.com to reserve a stall.

Two other dates to save in your diaries: the Autumn Local History talk on 9 October features Jackie Marsh-Hobbs giving an insight into the Grade II* listed Palmeira Mansions.

There will not be a WHCA Christmas Party this year but on 11 December an evening with Roger Luther will be dedicated to learning techniques to solve fiendish Cryptic Crosswords. Refreshments and bonhomie will be flowing to lubricate the brain cells.

Scrabble Scrabble

Are you interested in playing Scrabble on Wednesdays between 2pm and 4pm?

All are welcome to join a new Scrabble group starting in the Hall from Wednesday 12 September 2018.  All abilities to be included.

Come along at 2pm or write to us at westhillhall@gmail.com or West Hill Hall, Compton Avenue, Brighton BN1 3PS to let us know you are coming, so we can get enough cups out for tea.

Bring £1 to get in and nothing else but your Scrabble Skills and love of words and company.

Out and About in West Hill

On Saturday 7 July a number of volunteers answered Mo Parker and councillor Lizzie Deane’s call in the last edition of The Whistler to help reclaim Clifton Street Passage from the taggers and graffiti vandals. Not all the volunteers live in the Terminus area but all live in West Hill and are keen to show that positive action can be taken in the face of vandals and the lack of action by the Council, which no longer paints over graffiti on private property. What are Flowers?

Peter Batten thinks about flowers . . .

In January 2017, with my wife Nikki, I made a resolution. We decided that we would always have flowers somewhere in the house. So far, we have maintained that resolution.

As I write, the latest bunch is in a vase on the kitchen table. They are open and thrusting their heads forward like a group of excited children. Their colour is very subtle. I would describe it as orange with a hint of brown, plus some darker flecks. Their effect in the house is to introduce something unique, challenging, mysterious. What are flowers? Where do they come from? How did they come to exist – so many, so different? Continue reading What are Flowers?
