The Whistler – October 2018

The Eyes Have It
“Mickey” Illustration by Adrian Ventura

We have said goodbye to the amazing Summer and now we are looking forward to an action-packed  Autumn at West Hill Hall.

We start the total refurbishment of the toilets in October. This major work is to be carried out by our two favourite apostles from Skydec, Simon and Peter. We are truly grateful for two donations that will go some way to help with the substantial costs of the work. First,  we have been given a discretionary grant of £500 from Brighton & Hove Council, arranged by local councillor, Lizzie Deane. Second, while Hall manager/administrator Colette was sourcing equipment, she asked Brightwell Dispensers in Newhaven for prices on certain items. Their answer was to donate nearly £400 worth of equipment. Amazing!

We are skipping the Christmas Social this year but have three events coming up, as well as the increasingly popular monthly Quiz, where we had a capacity house in July, and put the FUN firmly into fundraising. On Tuesday 9 October  we continue our local history talks, with Jackie  Marsh-Hobbs giving us an insight into the history of Palmeira Mansions. On Saturday 24 November a Grand Christmas Sale will be held in the Hall between 10am and 3pm, with stalls offering a mixture of craft, gifts, books and bric-a-brac. On Tuesday 11 December Roger Luther is going to help us to solve cryptic crosswords. We want to keep West Hill minds ticking over into the holiday season so come and share some early festive cheer and delve into the tricks and tips to crack any cryptic clue.

We had a phenomenal response to the Sam Toft Colour-In competition: all entries can be seen on

In this edition we feature another talented local artist, Adrian Ventura. If you’d like to share your story and artwork in The Whistler, please get in touch at

Letters to The Whistler

Dear Editor

Sheila and Peter Sheppard of the Patcham Poetry Group, Art and Health Walk leaders, and windmill enthusiasts, spoke in 2017 of their plans for Brighton and Hove City Branch of the NHS Retirement Fellowship to put on an exhibition for the 70th anniversary of the NHS. The exhibition ‘Timeline in Healthcare 1018 – 2018’ was recently held at the Jubilee Library. Continue reading Letters to The Whistler

Introducing the WHCA Trustees – Part 4

Over the last few issues of The Whistler we have been introducing the current members of the West Hill Community Association management committee (the Trustees) to give you a flavour of who they are, what they do and maybe to inspire you to become one yourself.

In this issue we meet VINOD MASHRU

Vinod at the Hall in 2015 with the next generation of West Hill children

Together with my wife, Meena, I run Bright News in Buckingham Road, at the heart of the West Hill Community. The shop has been through a number of incarnations in its long history: a bookmakers, drapers, Bevoort Store Company, and a wine and spirit merchant to name but a few. From the 1920s onward it has served predominantly as a newsagent, also offering a valeting service in 1958! Continue reading Introducing the WHCA Trustees – Part 4
