The Absurd, Irreducible Uniqueness of People . . .

MANY YEARS AGO I came upon this statement in an article by Iris Murdoch (pictured). She was discussing the novels of Jean Paul Sartre. Although she admired his work, something fundamental was lacking. In this phrase she stated exactly what it was. Have you heard of Iris Murdoch? Perhaps just the name, Iris, will stir your memory. Did you see a beautiful film, just a few years ago, which contrasted the early life of a brilliant young woman with the final stages of that life, her mind struggling with dementia? Continue reading The Absurd, Irreducible Uniqueness of People . . .

Major Melody

SEVENTY-SEVEN YEARS ago Major Melody, a tall, handsome American Army officer, had begged my mother to be allowed to take me, the youngest of her five daughters, to dinner at the nearby US army camp. I loved it when Major Melody hugged me and insisted on holding my hand. There he was, at the door, and we stepped into the warm balm of a Devonshire evening and jumped into an open-top Jeep. One Thing is Certain . . .

AS I SIT to pen (or rather, keyboard) this article, it is raining. It is cold, and grey, and raining. The beautiful autumn leaves are being stripped from the trees, the fireworks are over, and, to cap it all, we have a General Election to look forward to. This appears to be because the Prime Minister is not “dead in a ditch”, and “do or die” the UK is currently still in the EU. This particular state of affairs is to be settled by having an election, it seems. Whilst it may be seen by some as a single-issue vote, there is probably a greater divergence between the major political parties than for the best part of 40 years, and their policies may have massive implications on financial markets. Let us examine some of the impacts of possible election outcomes. Continue reading One Thing is Certain . . .

Street Treasures

StreetTreasuresWHEN I MOVED to Buckingham Road two years ago, I didn’t expect to end up furnishing my new flat with junk from the street. What I discovered was a whole new world of street treasures, from abandoned tables and chairs to plant pots and bookcases. Almost every day that summer I experienced a feeling of complete joy as I came across yet another dumpster flanked by items just waiting for someone to welcome them into their home. A Wine Lover’s Dream at Bright News

What wine-lover has not, at some time, dreamed of owning a vineyard, whiling away long hot summers watching the grapes ripen, a glass of last year’s vintage in hand? A few are foolish enough to try it. A very few actually make a success of it; although, as the saying goes, you can make a small fortune out of wine-making, but only if you start with a large fortune. I’ve thought about this a lot, so imagine my interest when Colette, our co-editor, alerted me to the fact that Vinod Mashru is selling wine at Bright News, in Buckingham Road, that not only has his label on it, but which has been produced by a partnership between his family and a Spanish wine-making family in Rioja.
