Mystery surrounds this major development site which remains derelict, with no sign of any work being carried out despite having planning permission for 34 flats, including 14 affordable dwellings. Whilst the City Council’s Planning Committee voted to approve the application last August, the letter from the Council’s Head of Planning granting permission was not sent until 29 March this year! In the meantime, the ownership of the site has changed hands once again: the graffiti-defaced hoarding around the site now carries the name of Martin Homes, but the company’s website does not list the site among its ‘live projects’. Artist’s Open House Debut

Like many Brighton residents we have enjoyed the Artists’ Open Houses in previous Brighton Festivals: meeting artists, admiring and, sometimes, loving their art, and – I will be honest – indulging our nosiness to see inside other people’s homes. But this year, for the first time, it was our home that others visited. We were an ‘Artist’s Open House’, or, more accurately, an Artist’s Open Third Floor Flat, for our daughter to show her paintings. Artists Open Houses

Visiting the Christmas Artists Open Houses over three weekends, from 30 November to 15 December is a great way to discover the wealth of creative talent that exists in the city. Homewares, knitted artwork, photography, jewellery, ceramics, crafts, toys and textiles as well as handcrafted Christmas cards, wreaths, tree decorations and foodie gifts are all on offer.
