A Night At The Dome

JUST BECAUSE YOU can’t go out doesn’t mean you can’t go out. Brighton Dome is putting on a series of livestreamed events with authors, actors and podcasters. The livestream events will take place from August to November 2020, with tickets on sale from Brighton Dome’s website. Best-selling American author and LGBTQ+ activist, Armistead Maupin appears in a special event with Sir Ian McKellen (Aug 12, pictured), Graham Norton (Sept 27) and Jay Rayner (Sept 4).

The West Hill Writing Retreat

IT WAS ONE of the hottest days of the year. On the bus coming into Brighton, I already regretted signing up for a writing retreat in town. Doubtless I would end up in an airless room – they’re always airless in my experience – for six hours, pining for the sea and for fresh, if hot, air.  But I needed peace and quiet as well as the impetus to write solidly, so – maybe – this was the right course to pursue.  Spoiler alert here: Reader, it was. It’s not rocket science! (Well, maybe it is)

IT BEGAN WHEN a handful of men agreed to pool their families’ fireworks to provide a display for the girls at the orphanage in Eastern Road, Brighton. That was in 1952, and it was the start of the annual display that has been described as the biggest and best firework display on the south coast.
