Name Competition

The FedThe Fed’s Embrace Information Project is gathering information about groups, clubs and social activities on offer in neighbourhoods across Brighton and Hove. They are launching a website, searchable by postcode, which will show people all the great stuff happening. If you are involved, support or attend a group such a lunch club, coffee morning or arts group in your area they’d love to hear from you.

After languishing for a number of years, the West Hill pub is now under the new management of Iain Huddy, who, together with his team – Russell, Sam, and Tanith – is determined to bring the spirit of the traditional local pub back to The West Hill.

The Head Chef, Mike Wilson, has a varied menu on offer, including home-made burgers and Sunday roasts, which The Whistler editors sampled recently. We both had the vegetarian roast which came with generous portions of baked potato, carrots, broccoli, swede, nut roast and Yorkshire pud. It was hot and tasty and well-priced at £8 or £15 for 2. The wine list is reasonably priced: we had a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for £13.45 and there’s a decent house wine for £9.95. Everything (that’s practical to make) is home-made in Mike’s Kitchen from the burgers to the fat chips to the pickles. Kids can accompany adults until 8pm so it’s well worth a visit to sample the delicious food and friendly atmosphere.

The daily activities in the pub match the variety of the menu: traditional Irish stew accompanies Irish folk evenings on Sundays; on Mondays the burgers are £5 all day with an Open Mic session in the evening for performers, singers, and poets. Pit your wits at the Music Quiz on Tuesdays; Thursdays are curry nights; and the kitchen is open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with Indie music on Saturdays.

Welcome back West Hill !

West Hill Road Tarp Party

On 7 July 2012 it rained from the morning through to the evening with hardly a let up. But was the ‘Not the Jubilee West Hill Road Street Party’ in danger of becoming Not the Street Party at all? Not at all – especially when there was plenty of British bulldog spirit and neighbourly bonhomie to ensure the rain did not dampen the proceedings — although it tried, in buckets.

Euphoria Steel Band
The magnificent Euphoria Steel Band play on
A hastily-erected shelter of tarpaulins was improvised and stitched together with bits of old rope attached to parking signs (now, that’s why they’re useful). This allowed the magnificent Euphoria Steel band to entertain the covered crowd with some wonderful numbers and the music conjured up a picture of sunny Caribbean weather which was all too far away. They played Chariots of Fire in preparation for the occasion when they accompanied the Olympic Torch relay through Brighton and warmed everyone up with their enthusiasm. Ford-Fest

The Ford-Fest in April was a fabulous evening of fun and entertainment attended by Richard Ford’s many friends, colleagues and loved ones. Over £4k was raised for the Martlets in his memory. Many raffle prizes donated by individuals and local businesses were drawn, including a bottle of champagne donated by The Wellington pub and won by one of The Whistler editors.

Peter Batten writes about his involvement with the Neighbourhood Care Scheme

One morning, early in January, I went round to see my friend Bob. I visit him once a week for tea and a chat. This morning he was particularly pleased to see me. His left eye had been troubling him for several weeks and that day he woke up in agony. He asked me to phone his Doctor. I soon became involved in a whole series of calls, including arrangements for an ambulance. My final job was to help the ambulance team get him out of his flat and off to the Eye Hospital.
