Anything and everything

Avoiding Scams

No one likes to feel that they have wasted or, even worse, been conned out of their money. Unfortunately, there are plenty of situations in which you can be acting in good faith and suddenly find you’ve come off worse from a transaction. We use the word ‘scam’ to indicate a dishonest or fraudulent scheme designed to cheat someone. It could be anything from buying products or services, to making investments or becoming involved in apparently failsafe business propositions.

Older people can be an attractive target for scammers, not least because they are more likely to have easily accessible savings than younger people. Some older people are isolated and may not have anyone to go to for advice. Also, the older generation may be less likely to have access to the internet as a checking tool, although this is increasingly less true. Most of us can protect ourselves from scams if we have the right information and advice. What about carers, friends or relatives? If you are concerned that someone you know is being tricked, or is buying unsuitable products and services, you can look out for warning signs such as unusual amounts of post or evidence of large cash withdrawals; offer advice and support – reassure the person that this is a common problem and can happen to anyone.

Last Census in 2011

In 1798 demographer Thomas Malthus, published his essay on the ‘principle of population’. Malthus caused great concern by suggesting that population growth would soon outstrip supplies of food and other resources. Unable to support itself, Britain would be hit by famine, disease and other disasters. Concerned at this alarmist view of the future, people began to see the need for a census. Parliament passed the Census Act in 1800 and the first official census of England and Wales was on 10 March 1801. The first official head count revealed that Great Britain’s population at the time was 9 million. Since 1801 there has been a census every ten years except in 1941, during WWII.

I spoke to local resident Graham Miles of Albert Road recently, and asked him why he was all over the news in September. He told me that although his remarkable story of will power and determination started a number of years ago, it had been picked up by national newspapers and the BBC and had become ‘hot news’ in late August 2010.

In 1993 Graham suffered a massive stroke, was paralysed from head to toe, and was diagnosed with ‘locked-in syndrome’ – where he remained conscious and was able to think and reason as normal.
Doctors said he would be a prisoner in his own body for the rest of his life and would never recover. Everyone told him what he could not do, but he was determined to get his life back, which he did in spite of the hospital consultants.

Speed Networking

Speed Networking in action
Speed Networking in action

A world record, recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, was achieved for “the largest single mass participation business speed networking under controlled conditions in a single venue in an evening in the world.”

The event was organised by the dynamic Michaela Walker of Brighton & Hove Business at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel and The Whistler was there to witness the event. Master of Ceremonies, Paul Yates-Smith of Sussex Business Bureau, officiated after the City Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Wells and Martijn Dresen, the Director of Business Development at the Hilton Brighton Metropole and Jan Rust, Director of Brighton & Hove Business Limited provided opening speeches to start the World Record Attempt.

Participants took part in 3 minute sessions (90 seconds each to impart the key points of their business) and many people I spoke to said that, though frenetic, a couple of good leads is all it takes to make a great deal of difference to their business. At 9.30pm a world record was declared.

The Brighton & Hove Business Show is happening from 11am on 7 October in Hove Town Hall, where more flesh will be pressed, business cards exchanged, and contacts will be made.

The pastries were fresh, the jam tasty, the juices thirst-quenchingly cool and the idea unique. Delivery is free on orders over £10. We thought it a great idea for a Happy Birthday gift, but it is an even better idea as a Happy Me Day present, to be taken regularly rather than just once a year.

Bonjour Breakfast is the brainchild of the delectable and enterprising Rachel Lampen.

Phone 0844 3358445 or go to www.bonjourbreakfast.com to experience the delight we had on our box’s arrival.
