White Wall Cinema by Fraser Simpson

White Wall Cinema has been an ongoing pop-up cinema since 2015 and has undergone significant changes in its activity. Whereas before, it would be two to three screenings a year at venues ranging from clothing stores to church halls, it is now celebrating its 10th anniversary, having increased its frequency of screenings to one or two a week, having been at their permanent home in Wagner Hall since 2019, and currently enjoying their busiest year to date.

Henry Ray is one of the founders of White Wall Cinema and believes what makes White Wall special to him and those who attend screenings is that it’s all personal. To him, “It’s not done along the lines of business or to impress anybody, we just do it because we really love doing it and we have a passion for cinema. When people discover something that they previously thought wasn’t exciting to them, but someone has opened their door for them, they’ll want to come back and find more of that.”

It could also be said that White wall’s success has inspired other people to set up pop-up cinemas across Brighton. Henry himself has been told by people that “You’ve been the inspiration”, and he is happy that more has happened because of his work with White Wall, although he jokes that “If you’ve been doing it for 10 years, you’d hope that would be the case.”

The venue choice of Wagner Hall, which has seating ranging from 112 to 130, has been something that has benefited both White Wall and the people that own Wagner Hall. Henry said that, having used it once for an event, ‘We’re now fully involved with the place, which means a closer relationship, which is always good because venues are very difficult for pop-up cinemas.’

When it comes to the programming at White Wall, the screenings will range from as far back as the 1930s to something released relatively recently. As described on their website, White Wall’s screenings aim to “cover all types of film, from all genres and eras with a focus on those films that are a little off the beaten path, that you generally won’t find screened at your local multiplex.”. Henry expands on this philosophy, saying, “When we see something we liked and enjoyed, we think other people will enjoy it, and it isn’t primarily an audience thing, rather than ‘Will we get lots of people to it’, it’s ‘Will someone come to it and think it was great’. The sky’s the limit, how we decide is totally on instinct”.

The main worry with any cinema, especially a pop-up cinema, is the finances of the whole operation. Whilst Henry knows this is the biggest challenge for White Wall Cinema, he also isn’t fazed by the difficulty it may provide. He said, ‘You’ll take a hit on things financially, but as long as we’re sensible, and don’t be too ambitious as we go along, then you don’t have to worry too much. You’re very unlikely to ever make any money, but that’s not the point. If we were in it for money, we’d be doing something else entirely.’

The COVID-19 pandemic back in 2020 was detrimental to all aspects of life, but for a pop-up cinema like White Wall, it provided a unique scenario compared to other cinemas in the area. Henry recalls, ‘When things opened up in a socially distanced way, we could be swift and nimble and just do something because we’re not a major corporation. We started doing weekly or sometimes nightly screenings of different things in a socially distanced way. That was one of the things that really connected us to where we are now because we were doing it so consistently all through these periods when the rules allowed it. Because it was so unpredictable, because we were small and were just people, we could be “Oh, they’re opening again in 10 days, let’s do it.”

When it comes to the future, Henry is undeniably hopeful. With this year being the busiest for White Wall Cinema, Henry and his team are taking it as a year to be the best version of themselves, alongside planning something in the second half of the year that can be deemed as a birthday to celebrate 10 years since opening. Ultimately, Henry wishes to make White Wall Cinema and the venue of Wagner Hall ‘less of a pop-up, more of a hub for cinema. Part of the mission of the cinema was to create the thing that I thought should be here, and since it wasn’t here, so let’s just make it ourselves. We’ll do what feels right, but people seem to want more of it, so we’re going to grow organically with that and see how far they can take it.

Ultimately, Henry can be happy with where White Wall is currently at, and how it has transformed into a more frequent and vibrant place for people to watch films they might not have thought about watching in the first place. He feels grateful to those who keep attending screenings and believes the connection shared with them has become stronger since the pandemic. He said, “Since that time, people come up to me after screenings and say ‘You’ve saved my life’ because that was absolutely what they needed at that time. For us, it’s made a real connection between us and the audience and helped us decide that we wanted to keep doing this in a more serious way.”

Climate Cafe: Cat Fletcher


Continuing our virtual Climate Café where we look at people making a positive contribution to the planet, Gilly Smith talks to Brighton’s queen of reuse Cat Fletcher

Cat Fletcher has always been a trailblazer when it comes to environmental consciousness. She moved to England from Sydney in 1992 for love, but quickly became passionate about waste. 

Recycling had been a part of Cat’s everyday life back in Sydney; it was easy and efficient. “People simply set out their recyclables by their doors, and they were collected weekly without much hassle,” she says. The absence of a similar system in Brighton had Cat initially just sorting the leftovers at her friends’ houses after parties, collecting their bottles, cans and cardboard to recycle. “They just thought I was a bit bonkers,” she laughs.   

Her passion for reducing waste was rooted in her Sydney upbringing. Her father, a professional yachtsman, instilled in her an appreciation for materials and the work that goes into making things. “I had a good understanding of materials and the work that goes into making something. I look at things and have this X-ray vision of how have they made that? What’s that made of?” 

This hands-on approach was particularly useful when she had three young children and a tight budget.  “I just had to get a bit creative,” she says. “I used to pick things up off the street, you know, chest of drawers, a bag of stuff, and I’d take it back and see if I couldn’t paint it or fix it.” 

With an eye for an upcycling bargain, she took on a stall for years at Brighton Station’s legendary Sunday car boot. “ It was a place full of old school duck and dive guys. There were the Victorian antique boys who used to get there at three in the morning with their mining lamps, and they’d be gone by 7am.” With the kids asleep in the back of her van, she was perfecting her craft while making a name for herself and enough cash to pay the bills. It was this vibrant reuse scene that inspired Cat to take her passion to the next level. 

In 2007, when she had to downsize her home, she discovered Freecycle – an online platform for giving away unwanted items. Impressed by the concept, Cat decided to launch her own local group, Brighton Freecycle which quickly gained a loyal following. But frustrated by the rigid rules imposed by the US-based company,  she began to think about upcycling the group itself.  “I just thought, you know, I don’t need their Yahoo group. The group doesn’t even have to be called Freecycle. I can just make another Yahoo group. And so I did, at three o’clock in the morning, I just made up a name called a Greencycle Sussex, and I just transferred all the members of Brighton Freecycle onto that new group.” 

This bold move caught the attention of a Guardian journalist, who wrote a story about Cat’s independent venture. The article sparked a domino effect, with Freecycle groups across the UK abandoning the US organisation to join Cat’s new network. “By Friday night, I think 60 Freecycle groups had gone.”

nd so Freegle was born – a decentralised, volunteer-led network of reuse groups across the country. Over the next 15 years, Freegle would grow into a well-organized, legally recognised cooperative, with a team of dedicated volunteers supporting local groups, winning Cat a Sussex Eco Volunteer Award. 

It also won the attention of the head of sustainability at Brighton and Hove Council who was one of the judges. He invited her to join its sustainability partnership along with the main players in the city’s infrastructure. “So I turn up there and there’d be a skip outside full of furniture. I was like, ‘Guys, there’s a pile of reusable stuff being smashed to pieces outside. What’s wrong with you? Either give it to someone to use, or you can get money for metal that could be income for the council. Why are you paying a waste management company for a skip?’” 

Using Freegle to shift everything from desks to filing cabinets, windows to heaters to NHS surgeries, schools and individuals, she was soon emptying Council buildings, 16.9 tons of furniture from Bartholomews House alone. “I even gave away the carpet tiles on the floor”, she laughs. 

The clearance of the old Council HQ at Kings House won her a Naticnal Recycling Award, but also an introduction to the CEO of the UK’s largest waste management company bidding for a contract in Greater Manchester, valued at £50 million annually. As the contract demanded an element of social value, Cat spotted the opportunity to recycle the work that she was doing for the Council in Brighton and Hove and adapt it for Manchester’s specific needs. 

“They deconstructed this huge anaerobic digester, a great big industrial building, hollowed it out, brought in 20 shipping containers, turned them into art galleries and makers’ units. They brought in all the people that I’d found around Manchester that could fix, reupholster, upcycle, repair, jewellery and they all came in and got a hub, a place to work. And then they retrained 650 staff all around the tips, so now, when anyone in Manchester goes to the tip with anything that’s upcyclable, it goes back to all the different makers in that one hub and back out shops at the tips where they sell it. It makes over a quarter of a million in profit every year which goes back into the community.”

Music Review: Spill

Slap bang in the middle of their UK tour promoting their latest single ‘Mr Blue’, Spill stopped in Brighton to headline Hope and Ruin alongside Brighton’s Divorce Attorney and Torus from Milton Keynes, and the second Spill hit the stage it was clear that the crowd was ready for the psychedelic metal grunge hybrid the band has become known for.

Having seen Spill play many Brighton shows over the last year (their headline in Dust a particular highlight), it’s so clear to see their strength and progression from being a band that already put on a spectacularly tight and dynamic show, and this gig blew the doors off any previous perception of the band.

From their driving rhythm session of drummer Tom Williams and bassist Alain de Gouveia, Spill commanded the audience, highlighting lead singer Sophie Cawtheray’s vocals in the quieter moments equally.

de Gouveia’s bass tone – the best in Brighton? Go on. Argue with it – serves the kind of music Spill make excellently, balancing their more heavy influences with the psychedelic riffs of guitarists Kieran King and Charly Turpin.

While every member has their moment to shine in their setlist, lead vocalist Soph Cawtheray’s vocals were stronger than ever before at Hope and Ruin, leaning into the gravelly belt she uses oh so sparingly alongside the powerfully soft and subdued vocal melodies she has become so known for in the Brighton scene.

Spill has proven time and time again that they’re a band with serious potential and a strong sense of identity. Their journey on the Mr Blue tour seems to have done nothing but strengthen the already solid base they’ve built for themselves in Brighton and I can’t wait to see where they go from here.

Music Review: Flavours, Nel Blu, The Wrong Trousers & Call Me Franco

Friday night was a busy one down at The Green Door. Nestled underneath Brighton train station lies the tiny, cobbled floor venue which always seems to be absolutely packed. The hoards of people on the night were justified by the lineup of four fantastic bands.

The first to take the stage was Nel Blu, the grungy looking five-piece delivered a barrage of classic 2000’s indie sounding songs with a math rock twist with the keyboard and gentle, melodic guitar breaks. Fighting through the crows to see what they looked like, Nel Blu’s jangly indie bangers sounded exactly as I imagined they looked. Even if you’re staring at the back of someone’s head, you can tell these guys are a talented bunch, with songs sounding similar to massively popular indie bands like The Killers which easily got the whole room bopping along.     

As I finally managed to secure a view, The Wrong Trousers – a high energy, heavy punk band – hit the stage, and took it by storm . I loved these guys and their hardcore sound, the very fast drumming, wrist-achingly fast guitar and screeching vocals from their attitude fuelled frontman who bounced around the stage made a headbanging result. It’s refreshing to see a band which are keeping the punk sound alive while also combining it with some surf or shoegazey guitar parts to keep it interesting and put a modern spin on the genre.

Call Me Franco are, right now, perhaps the most original band in Brighton, and their set left me utterly impressed. The trio has no singer, instead opting for strange sound effects and voices – which sound like aliens attempting to make contact – acting as an introduction to their songs. With the guitarist and bassist using a range of effects pedals to create a unique result which they use to their advantage when alternating between heavy riffs and isolated instruments, using a lot of noise – or lack thereof – to their advantage.

Complimenting the rest of the band is the extremely talented drummer whose hard-hitting technique and rhythm drove the songs. Call Me Franco demonstrates clearly how a singer isn’t at all necessary in their arty rock style. The band that came to mind as a comparison is Muse, with their similar effects driven heavy rock, and yet at no point in the show did I feel vocals were missing or needed. Their unique sound kept us enthralled. A very cool instrumental band which you don’t see the likes of very often.

Following on from Call Me Franco were headliners Flavours, a four-piece modern sounding rock group championing the release of new single, the aptly named ‘Still Heavy’. With the two guitarists playing a mix of heavy riffs and very cool sounding melodies on their twin guitars while trading vocals, followed along closely by the bassist and backed perfectly by the drums; these guys solidly pay tribute to classic psychedelic rock, while making it their own with their atmospheric sound. They saved their new single until later in the set, delivering on the anticipation with a great tune which starts off with a jangly, soothing guitar intro and melodic singing before going into a brilliant guitar solo and heavy riff, which live up to the songs name and was a treat to experience live. If you want to see a current band exerting heaps of high-energy talent; these guys won’t fall short.

Music Review: Slag, Fever Rouge and Die Twice at The Hope & Ruin by Alex Hill

It was pouring down with rain as I walked up the high street to The Hope and Ruin, yet despite the conditions huddles of devoted smokers were lining the pavement outside the venue as I darted inside in search of shelter. It was a packed gig – the lineup consisted of openers Slag and Fever Rouge with Die Twice headlining; all exciting new up and comiong bands in the indie scene. Outside might have been miserable, but inside it was a night of sweaty, attractive young people playing guitars and screaming down microphones. What’s not to like? 

The night kicked off as Slag took the stage. From the name of the band, I’d expected some kind of aggressive hardcore punk band and yet was very pleasantly surprised to hear their mix of shoegaze and indie with dreamy guitar rhythms overlapped by keyboard and intricate guitar melodies played by the captivating frontwoman Amelie as she sang her heartfelt lyrics. While only having one song released, the Brighton based five-piece band already have a defining sound and clear appeal.  

Fever Rouge sounded more punk than Slag, with distorted bass lines, heavy guitar riffs and screeching vocals driving their fast-paced songs that still left room for breaks overlapped by surf-sounding guitar; giving them an interesting and unique sound. The highlight of their set was a breakdown during one of their songs where there was a wailing Van Halen-esque guitar solo accompanied by crazy drumming and the rest of the rhythm section all laying into it together. They definitely set the bar high for Die Twice. 

While by no means blowing away the previous bands, the headliners clearly had the heaviest sound and the highest energy performance – at one point towards the end I was enveloped in the mosh pit which bordered on teeth losing territory. They were yet another band with an extremely diverse sound, some songs had a funky, disco feel as the members danced around the stage. Others, including one of my favorites – ‘Evelyn’ – took a slower pace with the singer using voice effects with an alluring and sensual result. Of course some were also especially heavy, a delight to my ears as I and everyone around me were forced to bob our heads in appreciation. Die Twice sure has some eager fans – as well as creating a fairly scary mosh pit; shouts of “I love you” echoed through the room, and after playing their final song, resounding boos followed and so we were treated to not one but two further songs. 

The performance was brilliant; as well as sounding just like they do on their recorded songs (check their new EP ‘A Beautiful Thing’), They were bounding around the tiny stage and pushing their guitars under the noses of those in the front row to their delight, showing an undeniable stage presence – this is why small, packed gigs are simply the best kind, and The Hope and Ruin is a great venue. 

Slag and Fever Rouge both have some more shows in Brighton before Christmas, while Die Twice are currently gigging around the UK on tour – all three are definitely worth seeing live.
