This year’s World Sacred Music Festival offers its first ever trips down into the eerie underworld of Brighton’s magnificent Victorian sewers, with experimental Norwegian folk singer Unni LØvlid. The Festival has teamed up with Southern Water to bring Unni’s haunting songs, inspired by the west coast of Norway, into this unexpectedly beautiful, acoustically resonant setting.

“The audience will have to wear stout shoes and hard hats for the performance!” says Kate Whyman, festival director. “We wanted to try out unusual venues this year, to attract people who might not normally come to a sacred music concert.”

Dome’s Biggest Ever Season

Brighton Dome’s Chief Executive, Andrew Comben, launched the Dome’s autumn season recently.

The season has a glittering line up of events that will brighten up the dark evenings to come. There are two mini festivals: a celebration of Shakespeare with international and local theatre groups presenting Macbeth and Shakespeare a la Carte, as well as workshops; and Storyville, with 3 days of women’s literature events ranging from Clare Short to Lionel Shriver.

This bumper season also hails the legendary music of Paco Peña, the brilliant and popular choreographer and dancer Akram Khan, a special recital from the Heath Quartet, young theatre especially commissioned for Brighton Dome in Robin and the Big Freeze, the hip hop extravaganza, Breakin’ Convention, a laugh-athon at the Comedy Festival, and a whole Christmas season of events that truly sparkle.

Brighton Dome is open daily to the public, with the Foyer Café Bar open Tues-Sun from 10am to 5pm, plus bank holiday Mondays, trying to encourage people to experience the wonderful building outside event times. You’ll find a warm welcome from the attentive staff there.

Will Writing Week

Age Concern Brighton Hove & Portslade is holding a local Will Writing Week in partnership with local solicitors across the City from Monday 18 October. The Week aims to highlight:

  • The importance of those over 50 having an up-to-date will, even if they do not think of themselves as wealthy.
  • That proper legal help to make a will is widely available in the City.
  • That if someone feels they want to help local charities, they should state their bequest should be spent for the benefit of people in Brighton & Hove.
  • The events include bookable places at specialist Q & A sessions about wills at Age Concern BHP’s head office at Seven Dials, a specially extended Will Clinic. Please note that anyone wishing to partake of these services should book through the main office number and be over 50 years of age.

The Age Concern Information & Advice Team will also become mobile during the Week, offering non-legal general advice and information on any other issues you or your older loved ones may have, including benefits and entitlements advice.

Age Concern BHP is committed to staying local and helping older people achieve a better quality of life.
